Why do people use distinctively scented products?

FDS, Vick's Vapour Rub, or Desenex have rather distinctive smells, even from a distance. I'm amazed some people use them. Not that it's morally bad to have a condition, but these, amongst other products scream to the world "I think my smells", "I'm congested", and "I have athlete's foot"...
